How Long Does Certified Translation Take? Rush vs Standard Turnaround Explained

One of the most common questions we hear at A2Z Language Hub is "how quickly can I get my documents translated?" Whether you are facing an IRCC deadline, a court filing date, or a university application cutoff, knowing realistic timelines helps you plan ahead and avoid last-minute stress.

The honest answer is that turnaround time depends on several factors. Here is a detailed breakdown of what to expect for standard and rush certified translation, plus the variables that can speed things up or slow things down.

Standard Turnaround: 48 to 72 Hours

For most certified translation projects, the standard turnaround at A2Z Language Hub is 48 to 72 hours from the time we receive your documents and confirm the order. This applies to common document types like:

  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Driver's licenses
  • Diplomas and transcripts
  • Passport pages
  • Immigration letters and forms

Standard turnaround gives the translator adequate time to complete the translation, verify accuracy, and prepare the certificate of accuracy that accompanies every certified translation.

What Happens During Standard Processing

  1. Document review — we assess the source language, document type, page count, and complexity
  2. Translator assignment — the project is assigned to a certified translator specializing in your language pair and document type
  3. Translation — the translator produces a complete, accurate English translation
  4. Quality review — a second reviewer checks for accuracy, consistency, and formatting
  5. Certification — the translation is finalized with a signed certificate of accuracy
  6. Delivery — you receive the completed translation digitally (PDF), with hard copies mailed if requested

Rush Turnaround: Same-Day and 24-Hour Options

When deadlines are tight, A2Z Language Hub offers rush translation services with two tiers:

24-Hour Rush

Your translation is completed within 24 hours of order confirmation. This option works well for single documents or small projects when you have a deadline within the next few days and want a comfortable buffer.

Same-Day Rush

For the most urgent situations, same-day translation is available for documents received before noon (Pacific Time). Your completed, certified translation is delivered by end of business the same day.

Same-day rush is ideal for:

  • Court filing deadlines the next morning
  • Last-minute IRCC submission requirements
  • Urgent medical or legal situations
  • Documents needed for an appointment the following day

Rush services do carry an additional fee, but the translation quality is identical to standard turnaround. We never sacrifice accuracy for speed.

Factors That Affect Turnaround Time

Not every project fits neatly into a 48-hour or 24-hour window. Here are the main variables that can affect how long your translation takes:

Language Rarity

Translations from high-demand languages like Spanish, French, Mandarin, Hindi, and Punjabi are typically faster because we have multiple translators available at any given time. Translations from rare or less common languages like Tigrinya, Pashto, Rohingya, Sinhala, or Amharic may take longer simply because fewer qualified translators are available. If you need a rare language translation, we recommend submitting your documents as early as possible.

Document Complexity

A straightforward one-page birth certificate is much faster to translate than a 20-page academic transcript with course descriptions, a multi-page court order with legal terminology, or a medical report with specialized vocabulary. Complex documents require:

  • More translation time per page
  • Additional research for specialized terminology
  • More thorough quality review

Document Volume

Translating a single document is naturally faster than translating a full set of immigration documents that might include 10 or more pages across multiple document types. For large projects, we can sometimes split the work across multiple translators working in parallel, but the quality review stage still takes time.

Document Legibility

If your original document is a faded photocopy, a low-resolution scan, or handwritten in difficult-to-read script, the translator will need extra time to decipher the content. Providing the clearest possible scan or photograph of your documents helps speed things up considerably.

Notarization Requirements

If you need a notarized translation rather than just a certified translation, add time for the notarization step. This involves having the translation sworn before a commissioner of oaths or notary public. At A2Z Language Hub, we can arrange notarization as part of the service, but it typically adds 24 hours to the overall timeline.

How to Plan Around Your Deadline

Here are practical tips for making sure your translation is ready when you need it:

  • Start early — do not wait until the week of your deadline to order translations. Even standard turnaround requires 2 to 3 business days.
  • Submit clear documents — high-quality scans in PDF format reduce back-and-forth and speed up the process.
  • Communicate your deadline — when you request a quote, tell us your exact deadline so we can plan accordingly.
  • Bundle your documents — if you have multiple documents to translate, submit them all at once. This allows us to assign translators efficiently and deliver everything together.
  • Ask about availability — for rare languages, contact us before your deadline to confirm translator availability. We can sometimes pre-schedule a translator for your project.

Turnaround by Document Type

Here is a general guide to expected turnaround times at A2Z Language Hub:

  • Birth certificate — 24 to 48 hours (standard), same-day available
  • Marriage certificate — 24 to 48 hours (standard), same-day available
  • Driver's license — 24 to 48 hours (standard), same-day available
  • Academic transcript (1-3 pages) — 48 to 72 hours (standard)
  • Academic transcript (4+ pages) — 72 hours to 5 business days (standard)
  • Court documents — 48 hours to 5 business days depending on complexity
  • Medical records — 48 hours to 5 business days depending on length
  • Full immigration document package — 3 to 7 business days depending on volume

These are estimates and your specific project may vary. We always confirm the expected delivery date before starting work.

What About AI or Machine Translation?

You might wonder whether AI tools could speed up the process. While machine translation has improved significantly, IRCC, Canadian courts, and credential evaluation services do not accept machine-translated documents. Certified translation requires a qualified human translator who takes personal responsibility for the accuracy of the translation. There are no shortcuts for official documents.

That said, professional translators do use technology tools like translation memory and terminology databases to work more efficiently without sacrificing quality. This is one reason why experienced translation agencies can deliver faster than individual freelancers.

Pricing for Rush vs Standard

At A2Z Language Hub, translation services start at $55 per page for standard turnaround. Rush fees vary depending on the urgency and language pair but typically range from 25% to 50% above the standard rate. Same-day rush for rare languages may carry a higher premium due to translator availability constraints.

We always provide a clear quote with the total cost and delivery date before you commit to an order. No surprises.
