American Sign Language (ASL)

American Sign Language (ASL) is a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax, and cultural nuances. An ASL interpreter will sign, using ASL, what is spoken in English and voice into spoken English what is signed in ASL. ASL is conveyed through facial expressions, body movements, and the shape, placement, and movement of the hands. It is the primary sign language used in English-speaking North America. Not all Deaf and hard-of-hearing people use ASL; some use a combination of ASL signs and English signs, home signs, or foreign sign languages, while others may not use sign language at all.

How Does ASL Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) Work?

ASL video remote interpreting connects a Deaf or hard-of-hearing person, a hearing person, and a qualified ASL interpreter through a live videoconference instead of an on-site session. VRI is useful when no qualified interpreter is available locally or when an interpreter is needed immediately. A2Z Language Hub currently offers ASL interpretation through VRI only.
